Alps2010
August 2010 will see the first large scale cakeriders trip to the Alps. So thought it would be useful to pull information and chat that might be useful beforehand in to one page, so here goes.
We are off to stay at Narnia – http://www.chaletnarnia.com, simple map of Morzine and chalet – http://www.chaletnarnia.com/morzine-map.html.
An example of some of the waymarked trails can be found from this mountain bike piste guide (pdf), I am sure there are lots more so if anyone comes across some then post ‘em up.
Tried to pull together some useful information for us all…
Not sure what to take, here is a recommended kit list and for those of us that have not flown with bikes before here are some tips on secure bike packing. To revisit previous chat about Alp kit and stuff have a look at All the gear, post it here
In terms of kit I think Mr Pollard and Mr Jones are going to be taking a full toolbox (or two) and workstand so I think it is just a case of spares for the rest of us. So remember lot of inner tubes and spare brake pads!
I am sure that there is loads of other stuff that would be useful on this page so add a comment with links…
Also come across a little promotional video for biking in Morzine from morznet.com

Bit of information on lift passes – http://www.morznet.com/lift-system-and-passes/morzine-lift-pass-options-and-prices-summer.htm
Pretty much used all my spare pads now, time for another Superstar bulk pad purchase, just thought I’d mention it in case anyone else is running low.
Just got front tyre, spare chain, some powerlinks, spare tubes, spare cables, energy sweets and then thats me.
Spent the weekend swapping and replacing stuff, nearly there.
Good work, going to write a final list whilst having a beer at Glasgow airport later today.
Need to do a superstar order but think we’ll just get 4 pads for me and Cathy
Got one set and ordered another four, plus three of the brakes have fresh pads in them anyway so should be fine.
I think that we have 2 sets spare so could do with a couple more I guess.
I was reckoning on having enough to replace all brakes once should be enough.
Does anyone have a piston press? Figure we are going to be changing pads at some point over the weekend and it makes life much easier.
Piston press?? You mean a screwdriver?
Yeah I suppose, just after changing three sets of pads one after the other I was figuring it must make life easier.
Hello!!
Just a reminder to everyone to please have (or have available) some Euros in cash to pay for guiding. It is 220 Euro per day for 8 people (plus 12 Euro for each additional rider, so if we all ride together on one day it will come to 242 Euro…). No cards for payment I’m afraid!
Hmmmm should I swap Karens wheels for the Deore ones on 321s, wider and stronger rim and would give tyres a better shape.
Tricky one, have left Cathy’s bike was the dtswiss4.2, did think about swapping them for the Hopes but decided against as the ones she has have been running well
The wheels she has on are fine but the wider, stronger rim is tempting.
Would have to do it last thing as the rear one is on my Kona.
Should hopefully be able to pick up tyres tomorrow and then planning on getting tubes etc and everything else next week.
What you doing for gel/bars/food?
Not thought about food and stuff like that, maybe I should.
You going to test the GoPro on Sunday?
Oh never thought of that, might well do.
Not sure if I have put this up before but this is the map we want as a starting point – http://www.portesdusoleil.com/main/FCK/File/PDF/Panorama-VTT-Portes-du-Soleil-2010.pdf
yet another map type thing – http://www.morzine-avoriaz.com/PDF/plan-descente-vtt.pdf
Funny story. I managed a week of scaring myself shitless in the Alps with nothing more than a couple of scrapes to show for it. Cycling in to work this morning for my first day back, chain comes off, I go over the handlebars at about twenty odd miles per hour and I now have badly bruised ribs, hip and ego. On f*&K off big painkillers and two days off work owing to the fact I can hardly breathe!!! Go figure!!
Eek! Sounds somewhat painful – in fact just seen the picture! Ouch!
Road was just too smooth
…. unlike my riding style!!!!!
Haha, pesky potholes obviously!
