ride2015 – february

As well as being the shorted month of the year I have a sneaking suspicion that February might end up being the busiest month of 2015.!! As well as getting hitched also managed to get out on 15 rides during the 28 days of February.

It was also the month where the most number of cakeriders came together in one place. Though there were no bikes in sight and rather than lycra/baggy shorts (delete as appropriate) we were all in our best bib and tucker!

The month started off very similar to January with a lot of local rides, the slight increase in temperature meant that ice and snow was slowly (very slowly) disappearing from the trails.

With being off to get ready for the wedding it meant the possibility of a couple of cheeky hour long daytime rides which it has to be said made a nice change from the usual cold night rides.

Chris was over from Australia and seemed surprisingly keen to get out on the bike in a cold Scotland in February so not only joined me on a pre-ceremony ride on the day of the wedding but also his first ever night ride. Excellent stuff.

February also saw the first visit of the year to Glentress. On a shockingly warm Sunday (post ride food eaten outside) the lack of mud was a joy and we managed to squeeze bits of the red, black and blue trails.

In another first the downhill bike came out for the first time this year with an uplift at innerleithen. The day involved snow, sleet, wind and just a solitary “off” for both me and Phil.

Great fun to get back on the downhill bike!!

We were also joined on the uplift by a certain Danny Hart who on his final run of the day set off at the same time as us and managed to get down and get changed before we reached the car park. Reckon he may even be slightly quicker than our very own Charles Gnarles.

The final week of the month involved a couple of local rides on the cross bike which is perfect for getting out for an hour or so on some roads, fireroads and a little bit of singletrack.

One consequence of getting nearly 30 rides chalked up in the first couple of months of 2015 means there is quite a bit of bike TLC needed. So if the rain and sleet rolls in at the start of March as predicted it will give me time to do a little bit of fettling.

So coming in March will be the first event of the year with the Muckmedden 6hour which promises to be full of mud, roots and rocks.
